Tete Montoliu Facts [1] - Tete & Trane

Of course, there is jazz before Coltrane. In fact, as Michael Steinmann told me recently [check his very interesting blog Jazz Lives], "there was HEROIC JAZZ before Coltrane". But, admit it or not, there is jazz after Coltrane as well. And there is jazz even "during Coltrane".

In my neverending research on the complete chronology of Spanish blind pianist Tete Montoliu [check the old version at Michael Fitzgerald's Jazz Discography website; the updated and monstrously expanded version is coming soon], I've found some sources which mention that on October 25, 1963, after Coltrane's appearance at the Tivolis Koncertsal (Copenhagen) and Roland Kirk's Quartet with Tete Montoliu concert at the Jazzhus Montmartre (also Copenhagen), there was a jam session at the Montmartre with John Coltrane joining the Roland Kirk Quartet.

However, in reference to the John Coltrane Quartet at the Tivolis on Friday October 25, neither Birger Jorgensen in Politiken, Eric Wiedemann in Information, Torben Ulrich in B.T. nor any other Danish newspaper mentioned anything about a jam session with Roland Kirk and John Coltrane at the Montmartre after Coltrane's concert at the Tivolis. Anders Stefansen, who booked both the John Coltrane concert and the Roland Kirk performance at the Montmartre, rejects this reference categorically, and John Tchicai of the New York Contemporary Five and friendly with John Coltrane does the same.

So, in all likelihood, there was not such a jam session.
